History of the Popularity of Bowie Knives

This knife’s design is credited to Rezin Bowie, who gave the style his name. Necessity is the mother of invention, and it certainly was in this case. Historical mentions narrate that Bowie was out hunting one day and killed a rabbit. However, when he tried to skin the animal, he hit a bone, his hand slipped, and the blade injured him badly. To avoid this from happening again, he experimented and designed a style much better suited to hunting games.

The knife was popularized by Rezin’s brother, James, who was involved in the famous Sandbar fight of September 1827. Afterward, the newspapers describing the blade and James using it to win multiple other fights increased the fame, and soon, numerous manufacturers started producing Bowie knives. And later, when Damascus gained commercial popularity in the modern world, Damascus Bowie knives became a sought-after collectible and hunting tool.
